Selangor Wanita: PM wants us to back Shahrizat

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has urged Wanita Umno to rally behind its embattled leader Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who is now facing calls to step down from some of the wing’s leaders.

Revealing this today, Selangor Wanita Umno head Raja Ropiaah Raja Abdullah said Najib, who is also Umno president, had advised them on this during a meeting with the national Wanita Umno exco members in Putrajaya last week.

NONE“During the meeting, he had asked Shahrizat to continue to lead Wanita Umno, as she is well liked by the party machinery.

“There are various initiatives undertaken by Shahrizat that have been well received, such as the formation of Skuad Sayang (Caring Squad),” Raja Ropiaah told a press conference in Shah Alam today.

She was responding to the call by Wanita Umno deputy chief Kamilia Ibrahim for Shahrizat to quit her party post.

Raja Ropiaah, who is the movement's vice-chief, said she regretted the call made as it was not appropriate.

She said Kamilia's statement appeared to mean that the movement could not work with Shahrizat.
'It's Kamilia's personal view'
“Kamilia's statement is her own personal view as we do not share her view.
"She was not present with the meeting with Najib last Friday as she was overseas,” said Raja Ropiaah, adding that Kamilia's statement would not affect the movement as it was united under the leadership of Najib and Shahrizat.

“Tomorrow, there is the Wanita Umno gathering with the prime minister and we will pledge our allegiance to Najib and Shahrizat,” she said.

Kamilia was quoted by The Star today as calling on Shahrizat to resign as Umno Wanita chief to ensure the credibility of the wing, Umno, BN and the government.

The Wanita Umno deputy chief said that Shahrizat's resignation as a minister on April 8, after her senatorship expires, was not sufficient.

Shahrizat, whose family is embroiled in the National Feedlot Corporation scandal, last week stated her intention to leave her post in the cabinet.
