Container truck drivers’ protest goes into second day

KLANG, May 3 — Disgruntled container truck drivers are into their second day of protesting what they call exorbitant charges at depot gates and delays that have eaten into their income.
The Star reported on the gathering, held outside Northport in Bandar Sultan Sulaiman, with members arriving from 10 am and announcing their intention to stay until 8pm.
Thousands of drivers stopped transporting goods yesterday in Northport and Westport, though the protest was shorter than today’s, at only 2 hours.
Driver S. Rayan,32, was quoted saying the drivers would remain until 8pm waiting for their issues to be resolved.
A representative of a local haulage company had contacted The Malaysian Insider, claiming the protestors had, by their actions, created shipment backlogs and had even turned violent on seeing other container trucks.
The rep had included photos of trucks allegedly damaged by the protesting drivers.
“Since yesterday almost 8 trucks were severely damaged and 3 drivers were injured,” claimed the rep in an email.
