GEORGE TOWN- The Penang Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) will not be cowed by the prospect of a RM500,000 fine by the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) for an open burning offence during a rally in front of the Komtar building on May 25.
Perkasa northeast district chairman Mohd Rizuad Mohd Azudin said the action taken by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng through the council was ridiculous as he was only a taxi driver with limited funds.
"We are not cowed by this and we will continue our struggle as Perkasa has a lot of support from the public who are feeling the pinch.
"His (Lim) move is unreasonable because I am only a taxi driver, if there isn't enough money for the election I will willingly offer my taxi," he told reporters at a news conference here today.
At the demonstration, Mohd Rizuad and 20 other members gathered after Friday prayers to burn t-shirts he had received in a package.
As a result of the open burning, Perkasa could face a fine of RM500,000 under Section 29 (a) of the Environmental Quality Act.
Mohd Rizuad clarified that the demonstration had no intention of threatening or disturbing Lim and his family, but aimed to attract his attention so that a meeting could be held to explain Perkasa's seven demands.
He said Perkasa's decision to hold a demonstration at Lim's residence last Thursday was done after the chief minister had refused a meeting despite various efforts.
