KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Twelve-year-old Nayati Shamelin Moodliar, who was believed to have been kidnapped a week ago, has been found and is back with his family.
Sham Moodliar posted a picture of his son hugging another family member on micro-blogging site Twitter at 9.42 this morning with the message “Nayati is home safe!!!!!!!!!”
City criminal investigation chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah also confirmed this in a quick text message to The Malaysian Insider, saying the police will issue a statement later.
According to The Star, the boy, who went missing last Friday, was released in Rawang at 7.30am.
A page on social media network Facebook set up to find the boy, who was believed to have been abducted in front of Mont Kiara International School here, also confirmed the boy has been found.
“To all our family/friends/supporters of Nayati. We have got NAYATI back!!! He is back to our arms again! Thank you all for your support! We will post soon! Thank you — Moodliar Family,” said a posting on the page which has garnered over 18,000 likes.
The case has captured public imagination with posters of the boy appearing across the Klang Valley in various languages.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak also said on Friday via Twitter “I appeal as a father for nayati not to be harmed in any way,” and added that he has spoken to the Inspector-General Police to expedite the case.
Twitter also saw a trending topic #FindNayatiMoodliar and the news of his release has spread quickly across the social media platform.
The Dutch family has in the past week kept largely silent over the matter, saying a media blackout was to help ensure Nayati’s safety.
It has been unclear if there has been any ransom remand.
It was reported that Nayati, who was still in his school uniform, was abducted by two men in a black car on Friday at 7.35am a short distance from his school.
The men were said to have grabbed the boy while he was walking to school, bundled him into the car and sped off.
The Dutch embassy also said in a statement that “Nayati’s kidnapping is the subject of an ongoing investigation so we are unfortunately not at liberty to reveal any of the details of the case at this stage,” adding a press conference will be called tomorrow.
