Police ask for help to identify errant cops but...

In an unprecedented move, police are seeking public assistance to identify their own personnel who have been recorded assaulting protesters during the Bersih 3.0 rally last Saturday.

"I am urging those who were in the vicinity of the incident, including who were assaulted in the incident, to come forward with evidence..." Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh said in a statement late today.

Mohmad also urged eyewitnesses and victims of assault in the incident, on which pictures and video screenshots were provided in the press statement, to give statements to be recorded by police.

NONEHowever, the police appear to be only interested in one incident - the one that took place along Jalan Tun Perak as the photographs and video screenshots only show the scuffles in front of the OCBC bank branch there.

Many other photographs or video clips depicting police brutality during Bersih 3.0 that have been uploaded on the Internet by eyewitnesses were not mentioned.

KLCC or Dataran Merdeka?

In the same statement, Mohmad also appended photographs showing protesters "charging into a police barricade" that they claim is at "a location near Dataran Merdeka".

"The charge shows that the protesters had intention to head to Dataran, which was controlled by police and the City Hall," he said.

NONEHowever, the photographs shown match Malaysiakini's photographs of protesters breaking through a police human wall in front of KLCC, on the corner of Jalan Ampang and Jalan P Ramlee, about 5km from Dataran.

NONEMohmad said those who are in the photographs appended, or know those in the photographs, should contract police at any police station or get in touch with ASP Azmi Aziz of the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.

NONEAzmi can be contacted atazmiaziz@ rmp.gov.my or            019-2602344      and            019-3872344      .

Police yesterday issued to the media photographs of 49 protesters they seek to assist in investigations into acts of violence during the rally for free and fair elections.
In a separate statement, Mohmad said that a 39-year-old man has come forward to assist in investigations at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters at 3pm today.

"Meanwhile, a student aged 22 has promised to turn himself in while accompanied by his lawyer tomorrow morning," he said.
