Police: We never said tear gas was UN-approved

NILAI, May 15 — Police have moved to clarify news reports in which they are said to have stated that the tear gas used during the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28 was approved by the United Nations (UN).
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar told The Star the tear gas was imported based on UN-approved rules, and that the police did not at any point say that the world body had approved its use.
He was also quoted as saying the tear gas had been certified as not harmful by experts.
It was reported initially that Logistics Department (Weaponry) assistant chief director Syed Mustafa Raja Syed Nordin had said the tear gas complied with UN standards and that it was used by the United States, Canada and Switzerland.
On Thursday, the UN Coordination Specialist in Malaysia Dr Lin Mui Kiang issued a statement to say the world body was not in the business of approving tear gas as a riot-control agent.
