Merdeka is for all Malaysians, not just Umnoputras

YOURSAY 'I long for the day when we can truly celebrate Merdeka Day as a truly united nation, a clear sense of belonging and free from pathetic xenophobic politics.'

'Jalur Gemilang' campaign unfurls, tinged with criticism

Loyal Malaysian: I will be fair in my assessment of the 56 years rule of the Umnoputras - they have indeed done some good things.

But that does not mean I will overlook the rot that set in during the 22 misrule of that ex-dictator - the corruption, nepotism and the destruction of the independence of the judiciary, among others.

No, it is time for change as the Umnoputras have shown since 308 (March 8, 2008) that they have not understood the aspirations of the rakyat.

Change we can, change we must - change to a more fair, just, democratic and civil society.

Odin: What a blatant abuse of public funds to mark not the Independence Day and the National Day but to promote the BN.

A few hours ago, I came up with a new slogan for the BN to use in place of its 'People first, performance now'. It is 'Me first, money now'. For this BN self-promotion campaign, I propose 'Promises delivered emptily'.

Armageddon: PM Najib Razak said, "We have been independent for 55 years. There are countries that have been independent for longer than we have but still not as advanced."

Why didn't he compare us with Japan which was wrecked in the Second World War, and also compare us with South Korea or Singapore.

He must be comparing us with an African country which probably have no natural resources and probably afflicted with drought all year round.

Timothy: When someone say I have delivered, then I must have received. So, Kampung Baru, Little India, Chinatown, Little Sabah, Little Sarawak should ask ourselves, did we receive?

Yes, we have received some, but much have been taken away from us.

Abasir: The daily chaos and squalor that make up the essence of Brickfields is a true measure of Umno's 'achievement' and 'promises kept'.

Putting on garish colours and ridiculous arches on its facade makes a difference ... about as much as putting lipstick on a pig.
The long-suffering residents of Brickfields who have over the years seen their quality of life deteriorate to its current levels, will have to make a choice between the illusion of development offered by the likes of property vultures such as MRCB and one where the urban poor see a steady improvement in their daily lives.

After 55 years of unmitigated deterioration, Brickfields now remains a living symbol of Umno's deliberate neglect of a community.

Anonymous #18452573: The thing about BN is they know how to look united, dress united and appear united.

Pakatan Rakyat, for some reason, always appear like a bunch of mismatched and uncoordinated individuals.

Good public relations does make a difference and BN knows it because they know they have done a lot of no good but just enough of good to influence the fence sitter.

Isn't it time that Pakatan started to look like a united team coming down to play the real game where winning is everything? It is a shame that Pakatan has not figured that one out.

Headhunter: The PM unfairly hijacks everything that is good in the country and blames the the opposition for things that have gone bad. But we can't be fooled. Not anymore, Mr PM.

Kit Siang: BN set on hijacking Merdeka Day

Moontime: BN is not prepared because they can't grasp the meaning of bipartisanship. It's too complicated for their weak, feeble, sex-crazed and vengeance-filled mind to comprehend.

You can't expect a party that has been for over 54 years wallowing in muck to suddenly start smelling all sweet and nice, can you? Desperation truly brings out the worst in BN.

Going on a propaganda blitz, throwing money left and right as if there's no tomorrow while scrambling to do damage control over a myriad of scandals and loose-tongue politicians, have taken a huge toll on the leadership.

A sure sign that everything is not going well for BN is when the old dinosaur aka Dr Mahathir Mahathir starts appearing again like an old ghost that refuses to go away.

I long for the day when we can truly celebrate Merdeka Day as a truly united nation, a clear sense of belonging and free from pathetic xenophobic politics.

Ferdtan: We know that BN is hijacking the Malaysian flag for their purpose. To them, patriotism means loyalty to the federal government - that is the perception they are creating.

Instead of fighting the losing game, join them. Selangor or other Pakatan states should join in the celebrations by giving out free flags - a Malaysian flag on top of Selangor/Penang, etc, flag.
This is killing two birds with one stone - show loyalty not only to the country but also the state and the best of all, neutralise the BN tactics.

Rakyat Malaysia: Obviously, Najib is doing election campaigning now. It has started a year ago or more. Maybe Pakatan should also be doing Merdeka campaign. Merdeka-kan rakyat Malaysia daripada jajahan BN.

I wonder how many millions this is going to cost taxpayers. Merdeka does not belongs to BN. It belongs to the people of Malaysia and we must be free from false democracy.

Anonymous #19098644: This is the best opportunity for Bersih 4.0 to be called where all Malaysians turn out in full force to reclaim our country. It would be good to see if they will close Dataran Merdeka on Merdeka Day. - Malaysiakini
