HEAD ON CLASH Penang Malay chamber SUPPORTS port takeover by Syed Mokhtar
GEORGE TOWN -Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce (PMCC) has on Friday announced that it is supporting the privatisation of the Penang Port to Seaport Terminal (Johor) Sdn Bhd.
Its president, Rizal Faris Mohideen, said the privatisation of Port to Seaport Terminal will turn it into a world-class facility.
Speaking after a meeting with Seaport Terminal director Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, Rizal told reporters that they were satisfied with the company's plan for the port following the privatisation.
"We are satisfied with the presentation by Datuk Mohd Sidik as it was very clear and thorough, which clearly demonstrated that the the port privatisation will benefit every one.
"We also want those with good credentials to run a port like this since as Penangites, we would like to see it (Penang Port) transform into a world class port," Rizal said after the presentation which included other stakeholders.
Rizal said the chamber were not interested in politics concerning the privatisation of the port.
"We are focused on how the privatisation will help business in the state,".
"The company also said that they are committed to improve and retain the ferry services that is an icon for Penang," he said.
The privatisation of Penang Port to Seaport Terminal was revealed by the Transport Ministry in Parliament at its last sitting.
However, the decision has not gone down well with both the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government and the Barisan Nasional state opposition.
The DAP has launched a signature campaign while BN has written to the National Economic Council asking for the privatisation decision to be reversed.
On July 26, Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce (PCCC ) announced its intention to lead a consortium comprising the state Malay and Indian chambers of commerce as well as the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers to bid for the port.
On this, Rizal said he will speak to PCCC president Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping to advise him to accept the privatisation to Seaport Terminal.
When contacted, Tan declined to comment.
