KUALA LUMPUR, -- Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin ulia today asked a DAP MP not to raise in the house an issue over the credibility of a defence witness in an ongoing trial.
Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor), when speaking during the debate on the Supply Bill 2013, had raised the issue of the credibility of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a defence witness in the Port Klang Free Trade Zone (PKFZ) trial.
When the DAP chairman insisted that the issue was of public interest, several backbenchers - Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak), Datuk Zulkifli Noordin (IND-Kulim-Bandar Baharu) and N. Gobalakrishnan (IND-Padang Serai) - objected, saying Karpal Singh had his own agenda for doing so.
Pandikar Amin advised Karpal Singh not to raise the issue, saying it was improper to bring up in the house matters pertaining to an ongoing trial.
"You can express any legal opinion outside the house. Do not use the house, citing freedom of speech and public interest. I cannot allow that," he said.
Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh (BN-Kalabakan) asked Karpal Singh to change the subject.
