Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd, contractor for the much-criticised Automated Enforcement System (AES), has denied the allegation that it is closely related to Johor Umno politicians.
"Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd would like to state that the company does not have any business links or connections with Umno," said Beta Tegap chairperson Nik Ismail Nik Mohamed in a statement issued toMalaysiakini today.
However, he admitted that Redzuan Salim, the late father of Beta Tegap's largest shareholder Rozana, was an Umno member but he died 12 years ago.
"We would like to request that her family not be slandered, given the demise of her late father more than a decade ago.
"This is highly insensitive and clearly cheap publicity. According to the hadith of Prophet Muhammad SAW, we should not speak ill of the dead," he stressed.
Beta Tegap is one of the two firms given the contract to install and manage the AES traffic summoning system.

Selection not due to association with anyone
PKR Teja assemblyperson Chang Lih Kang on Monday questioned whether Beta Tegap is Umno's crony as both parents of Rozana were Umno assemblypersons and her cousin is the current Machap assemblyperson Hamid Abd Rahman.
Chang (left) also furnished a document from the Companies Commision of Malaysia indicating that Rozana is a director of Beta Tegap and she controlled 5,880,000 of its shares.
Elaborating on the contract, Nik Ismail said in 2005, agencies under the Transport Ministry undertook an extensive evaluation of the AES systems’ implementation in other nations.
"In 2007, nine companies with international technical partners were invited to participate in a live testing of their system on Malaysian roads.
"From June 18, 2007 on the Guthrie Corridor Highway and Putrajaya, seven of the companies took part in the assessment of their systems on Malaysian roads.
"Beta Tegap was selected based on our performance and the expertise of our international technical partners during the live testing, and not because of any association with anyone," he added.
