DBKL: Marchers need permission to use Dataran

Himpunan Hijau must apply for a permit in order to camp overnight at Dataran Merdeka on Sunday, said Kuala Lumpur mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib.

"If Dataran Merdeka, yes. We take care of the area," he told a press conference after a function in Kuala Lumpur.

NONEActivists from Himpunan Hijau plan to end their 300km march from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur at Dataran Merdeka, where they will spend the night and use the same venue to receive MPs on Monday.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has also been invited to appear at Dataran Merdeka on Monday.

Himpunan Hijau is one of several groups that have been actively protesting against Putrajaya's decision to allow Australia's Lynas Corporation to operate a rare earth refinery in Gebeng, Pahang.

According to Lynas, the plant would be operational by next month.
Under renovation
Ahmad Phesal added that Dataran Merdeka is currently under renovation and hoped that Himpunan Hijau would show understanding.

NONE"I urge Himpunan Hijau to be understanding and show discipline.

"We don't want to take any action that may affect the harmony of Kuala Lumpur," he said.

When pressed repeatedly if DBKL would confiscate tents used by Himpunan Hijau, Ahmad Phesal refused to confirm the matter.

"If they did not get permission, then it is under the mayor's jurisdiction (to take action)... I will take action after speaking with DBKL's management," he said.

During the run-up to the Bersih 3.0 rally, DBKL personnel had seized camping equipment from the Occupy Dataran movement and arrested two of their members.
