Motorists in Klang Valley have wasted some RM6.6 million in summonses during the first three quarters of 2012, all because they were impatient on traffic lights, said Kuala Lumpur police traffic chief Rusli Mohd Noor.
Rusli said a total of 22,054 summonses had been issued between January and September this year for traffic light offences, which stipulate a RM300 penalty per offence.
The figure was significantly lower than 2011, he said, when 35,185 summonses were issued costing RM10.55 million.
“Many drivers don't bother abiding traffic light signal but the fact is, it guarantees their safety and helps smoothen traffic in city centres so that there would not be traffic congestion,” Rusli was quoted as saying by Bernama.
He also took to task those who still think the yellow light was to accelerate their speed.
“It means you should be ready to stop, slow down or better, just stop,” he added.
Rusli said the summonses were issued based on camera recordings at traffic light junctions as well as through traffic policemen in city centres.
