PETALING JAYA- Deputy Perak Speaker Datuk Hee Yit Foong who quit DAP in 2009 to become a Barisan Nasional-friendly independent, wants to re-contest Jelapang under the national front banner in the 13th general election, and said she will not run away from her constituents.
"I will be in Jelapang till death and not be a renegade," she was quoted saying by Sin Chew Daily today.
Oriental Daily News reported two days ago that she would likely contest as an independent.
Hee had been instrumental in ending Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) administration of the state when she, together with Mohd Osman Jailu (Changkat Jering) and Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang), both of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), opted to become independents a year after the 2008 general election.
She told Sin Chew she believed the voters of Jelapang have accepted her decision as she has been serving them all this while.
Hee made her political debut in 2004 when she won the seat by a majority of 252 votes under the rocket symbol.
Four years later, she retained the seat with a majority of 6,707 votes.
She expressed her desire to be given the BN ticket when asked to comment on a report that she would most likely contest as an independent.
However, she said it was up to the BN top leadership to make the final decision.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, meanwhile, denied having any discussion with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak on Hee's contesting the seat in the next elections.
"Nor did the Jelapang MCA division and I deliberate allowing an outsider to stand in the seat on the MCA ticket," he said in a statement today.
"It is unlikely that she will win without the support from the MCA division and especially the grassroots members."
The opposition, meanwhile, does not believe Hee can make waves again in Jelapang.
DAP state chief Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham said: "Should Hee Yit Foong be endorsed by the Barisan, good luck to them".
He said that in 2008, the people of Jelapang voted for the DAP rather than the candidate.
