KUALA LUMPUR- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should not practise double standards when fulfilling its responsibility, said Jaringan Melayu Malaysia.
Its president Azwanddin Hamzah Said yesterday questioned why the commission was only coming down hard on certain entities while turning a blind eye on more pressing matters.
“MCMC is quick to act against telecommunications companies regarding dropped calls not to mention offering them the chance to make billions of ringgit from 4G services.
“However, when faced with political issues, such as the lies and slander spread by pro-opposition blogs and portals, they remain silent,” he said.
Azwanddin questioned why the information on these portals were not regulated, adding that the ‘actors’ in the commission were afraid their own secrets may be revealed by the opposition.
“Many NGOs, including ourselves, have lodged complaints to MCMC in the past, but it seems they are still practising favouritism on certain matters.”
MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi had on Tuesday defended the commission’s decision to select eight companies as recipients of the 2.6 GHz bandwidth.
The new spectrum allocation is expected to be fully utilised by telcos in the country to provide 4G services.
Particularly questionable was MCMC’s decision to give newcomer Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd a large allocation, sparking allegations of favouritism.
Sharil, however, said the decision was in line with the commission’s approach of providing equitable distribution and not letting the “big boys” get too big for their boots.
