The acquittal today of police corporal Jenain Subi who was charged for shooting dead 14-year old Aminulrasyid Amzah (pic) in 2010 has been described as shocking by PKR, who said the government, Attorney General and the police were guilty of not ensuring justice was served in the case.
"From the moment the shooting occurred, the police attempted to cover-up the case and fabricate evidence against the deceased and his family. The police version that Aminulrasyid tried to reverse the car onto police personnel and that there was a parang in the boot of the vehicle was proven false during court proceedings," said PKR vice presidents N Surendran and Nurul Izzah Anwar in their joint statement
They pointed out the failure of the Home ministry to offer an apology despite the baseless allegations against Aminulrasyid, including those by then Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar, now the deputy inspector general.
"The Government, Home Ministry and IGP must tender a public apology to the family of Aminulrasyid on the false allegations made against Aminulrasyid and his family after his death," the statement added.
It also recalled that Aminulrasyid's friend Azamuddin Omar, who was at the scene, had lodged a report that police had attempted to murder him during the incident.
"No action has been taken against any police officer on Azammudin's report," the statement added.
In the incident which shocked Malaysians, Aminulrasyid was shot at the back of his head by police while he and a friend were traveling in a Proton Iswara. The police later claimed he was involved in armed robbery, drawing angry reactions from family and friends.
In his report, Azamuddin who was with him in the car said they were chased by a team of policemen in an MPV as soon as they overtook them. One of the policemen then kicked and punched him when he got out to surrender, before he escaped and went home.
Nurul and Surendran said the authorities "had no hesitation in defaming a poor dead boy" while at the same time tarnishing his family's reputation.
"For the family who sufffered this tragic and enormously painful loss, there can now be no closure," they said.
Today's ruling, they said, further underlined the urgent need for the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission.
