BUTTERWORTH, Dec 6 – The Road Transport Department (RTD) has other mechanisms to implement the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras if the Penang state government continues to reject its implementation in the state.
Penang RTD director Datuk Hassan Yaccob said his department would brief the state government to explain how the AES functioned and its effectiveness.
“RTD director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan is expected to give the briefing and we are waiting to be called by the state government on this matter.
“If the state government still rejects the system despite our explanation, we will use other mechanisms which will be announced by Datuk Solah,” he said after a briefing on AES, here, today.
Newspapers recently reported that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng did not want AES cameras to be installed in the state and would take them off if they were installed.
Meanwhile, Hassan said 57 accident-prone locations had been identified by the department for the installation of AES cameras in the state.
He said, of the total, 39 AES cameras would be installed along major roads to detect offences involving the speed limit while 18 would be placed at traffic lights. – Bernama
