Free education will come at a cost, says minister

BERA, Jan 19 — Malaysia can only offer a 100 per cent free education on condition that all basic necessities subsidies, including petrol and diesel, are abolished, said Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“If these subsidies are taken away, people will suffer like in several European countries, where they have to buy basic necessities at current market prices,” Ismail Sabri (picture) told reporters after distributing the RM100 school aid at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kerayong near here yesterday.
He cited Spain as an example, saying the country had a 20 per cent unemployment rate.
He was asked to comment on the suggestion made by a Universiti Utara Malaysia law student that the government provide free education as in Switzerland, Venezuela and other Latin American countries, during a forum at the university in Sintok recently.
Malaysia already provides free education from primary to secondary school and bears 90 per cent of the cost of tertiary education as well, he added.
A total of 14,000 students in the Bera district have been allocated to receive RM1.4 million under the aid programme. — Bernama
