I will respond, says Kak Listen

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen Syed Shah Miskin, or more popularly known as 'Kak Listen' after a video showing her berating University Utara Malaysia (UUM) law student KS Bawani during a forum last month went viral on the Internet, will respond to the issue soon.

Sharifah told Sinar Harian that she would issue a statement soon, but did not say when and where.

"God willing, I will inform (in shortest time)," she is quoted as saying by the Malay daily.

NONEThe forum, titled 'Are university students in line with politics?' was jointly organised by a hostel committee of UUM and NGO Suara Wanita 1Malaysia (SW1M), which is led by Sharifah, at UUM on Dec 8 last year.

It was attended by more than 2,000 students.

A 24-minute video of Sharifah browbeating Bawani during the forum went viral on YouTube last week, causing an uproar among netizens and opening a floodgate of online jokes, as well as pictures and videos poking fun at the SW1M chairperson.

As at this morning, the video has been viewed more than 665,000 times in the eight days it has been up.
Ambiga: That's freedom of speech

Yesterday Malaysiakini contacted the programme manager of the little-known SW1M, by the name of Azhar, for comment, but hedeclined to say anything except that the NGO would call a press conference soon.

Although Umno leaders, including Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, were quick to distance themselves from Sharifah, it has been confirmed that Sharifah was once the deputy Wanita chief of the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma), an associate party of Umno.
Meanwhile Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Shreenevasan, who was labled a “pencetus anarki di Malaysia (catalyst of anarchy in Malaysia)” by Sharifah during the latter’s tirade against Bawani, has urged all parties not to go overboard in their critisicm of the SW1M president.

“I think we shouldn't overdo the criticism. Some of it is downright sexist and unnecessary. Enough has been said and I hope a lesson was learned from this,” Ambiga was quoted saying in The Sun Dailytoday.

On being branded an anarchist, she said Sharifah is free to say what she wants, adding, “That's freedom of speech. What was said was disgraceful and the public outcry is fabulous”.
