JAKARTA, Jan 22 – Malaysian students in Aceh are reported to be safe, following a 6.0 magnitude earthquake this morning.
Education Malaysia Indonesia director Associate Prof Dr Juzhar Jusoh said, there were more than 120 Malaysian students in Aceh, all of whom were located at Banda Aceh town.
“We have contacted our students in Aceh and were told they felt the tremors, but were safe,” he said when contacted here.
The earthquake, which occurred in the sea surrounding Penasi Island located between Banda Aceh and Breureh Island, 15km southwest of Banda Aceh, has left an eight-year-old girl dead and at least, seven people injured.
The deceased and the injured were from three villages in the sub-district of Idie in Aceh.
The 5.22am quake also destroyed several homes in the district of Pidie and damaged many others. – Bernama
