Protest against 'vote BN' course for Orang Asli

More than 50 people protested in Ipoh this morning against a 'vote BN' training course conducted by the Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) in Orang Asli villages in Tapah last month.

PKR leaders, activists and representatives of Orang Asli villages gathered in front of Perak Jakoa headquarters, demanding the resignation of director-general Mohd Sani Mistam for infringing on the rights of the Orang Asli.

pkr accuse tapah orang asli vote for bnIn a statement, Perak PKR pointed out that BN's Ayer Kuning assemblyperson and Tapah BN chairperson Samsudin Abu Hassan have admitted that Umno and Jakoa hadconducted the training.

“This shows that Jakoa favours Umno and has been made a campaigning tool of Umno and BN,” reads the statement.

Samsudin has reportedly argued that the programme organised by his division was to teach Orang Asli voters the correct way to cast their ballots.

He admitted that 5kg of rice had been given to each Orang Asli voter, but argued that this was not a vote-fishing exercise.

Perak PKR urged Jakoa to stop all such 'voting training' nationwide because the programme breaches the Election Commission Act 1957 and can be investigated under the Criminal Procedure Code.

azlan“We suspect that this programme has been carried out at national level up to the interior areas of Sabah and Sarawak, and Orang Asli villages in Pahang and Kelantan,” it said.

It further called for all Jakoa officers involved to be investigated, and urged the police and the Election Commission to take legal action against those involved including Samsudin and Chenderiang assemblyperson Mah Hang Soon.

Perak PKR vice-chief Baldip Singh, treasurer Yap Yit Thong, deputy secretary Tan Kar Hing, election director Ismail Yusuf, Youth exco Sandrea Ng, Orang Asli lawyer Bah Tony and Bah Azmi, the chairperson of the Orang Asli Villages Network in Peninsular Malaysia, were among those at the protest.
