State govt did not issue orders, says exco

The Malacca government also wants non-Muslim restaurant operators to provide evidence that state Islamic religious council ordered them not to sell food to Malays.
PETALING JAYA: The Malacca state government today denied issuing any orders to the state Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) to restrain non-Muslim restaurant owners from selling food to Malays.
State executive councilor R Perumal said the state government wants affected non-Muslim restaurant operators to step forward and lodge a report if they had received such orders from JAIM.
He was commenting on a FMT report yesterday that a restaurant owned by a non-Muslim in Jasin, Malacca was asked by JAIM and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry officials not to sell food to Malays.
It was reported that restaurant owner P Segar, 52, who runs the eatery in Bandar Baru Jasin, Malacca, received a verbal order from JAIM not to serve food to Malays because the restaurant did not allegedly display its price list.
“There was no such order from the state government or from the chief minister Mohd Ali Rustam’s office…this is something serious and we are looking at it,” Perumal, who is also state MIC chief, told FMT.
Perumal also said he too had received several complaints that there was a group of people going around telling non-Muslim restaurant owners not to sell food to Malays.
“It is not only in Malacca but nationwide. But, what we want to know is the identity of the JAIM officers involved in this kind of things in Malacca. We do not know where they are from. They can be from JAIM or anywhere else,”said.
He said he was willing to assist any non-Muslim restaurant owners if they faced similar problem.
“But, they must come with more details about the officers who gave them the instructions,” said Perumal.
He also requested Segar to hand over the CCTV footage of the actual incident in order to identify the officers involved.
“We can only act, once we identify the person,” he added.
