A harmonious atmosphere marks the first day of Chinese New Year

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — The Chinese community celebrate Chinese New Year today which marks the start of the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac in a lively and harmonious atmosphere. 
It is a very auspicious start as the weather is generally good and festivities are livened up by the presence of national and community leaders who are joined by Malaysians from all walks of life at the numerous open houses held to celebrate the festive occasion. 
In the country’s capital city, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and two former prime ministers, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, joined more than 10,000 people at the CNY open house organised by the MCA which was held at the football field at the Seri Johor flats in Cheras here. 
The main streets in the capital are also free of the usual dense traffic following the exodus of much of the city folk, who are taking advantaging of the festive season, to go back to their hometowns. — Bernama
