DAP’s ‘Popeye needs spinach’

Using comic heroes, DAP launches its online fund-raising campaign and appeals to the public to help it fight the giant.
PETALING JAYA: In the popular cartoon series Popeye the Sailor Man, the hero needs to down a can of spinach for strength in order to defeat his giant-sized nemesis Brutus.
Similarly, DAP needed its dose of spinach to vanquish its mighty opponent Barisan Nasional.
This was the simile used at the launch of the party’s online fund-raising campaign for the general election this morning.
Apart from Popeye, there were also other comic heroes appealing to the public to dig deep into their pockets to help the opposition party.
One placard showed Spider Man saying that DAP was running low on web fluids and cash, therefore it needed cash to fight in the mother of all elections.
Another depicted a sumo wrestler and a much smaller opponent with the words, “Help us defeat the BN Goliath and donate, because every ringgit counts.”
‘Donate for change’
Speaking at the event, DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua appealed to supporters to donate for change and to be part of history.
“This campaign is necessary to help us defeat BN and to bring about a new government based on competency, accountability and transparency in the coming general election.

“We need generous contribution,” added the Petaling Jaya Utara MP.
Pua said that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter would be utilised to further spread the campaign.
“We hope for the public to contribute whatever they can to show their support,” he added.
Pua said that funds could be channeled directly by going to http://dapmalaysia.org/donate or could be banked under “DAP Malaysia”, Maybank account number 5141 7814 5866.
The coming general election was considered the most important in the nation’s history thus far, with observers claiming that the opposition had a chance of seizing federal power.
