Action must be taken against those who ambushed the Malaysia Nanban's office in Jalan Ipoh.
It is reported that a group of about 60 persons ambushed the office of Malaysia Nanban demanding answers over an article written involving the PPP. It is further reported that a reporter was injured in the process.
Journalists must be reassured of their safety when carrying out their duties. We simply cannot have a situation where persons who are unhappy with reports are allowed to ambush or assault the reporters concerned. This is nonsense. It is plainly unacceptable.
Use legal avenues
If reports offend, those offended have legal venues through which they can take action to address the situation. They can ask for retractions, ask for their views in rebuttal to be published or sue if necessary. They may even lodge police reports and call for criminal prosecutions.
But to allow incidents like these to go unpunished would be to encourage further aggression against members of the press, which to my mind cannot be allowed under any circumstances.
The Attorney General must therefore act in order to ensure that those who are found to have broken the law in this case, are punished accordingly.
