WHAT A PARTY! Andy Lau sings at Vincent Tan's birthday bash
KUALA LUMPUR - Little did Berjaya founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan know what surprises were in store for him when he turned 61 on Saturday.
What surely took the cake was the appearance of his old friend Hong Kong star Andy Lau.
Tan appeared stunned by the sight of his pal, and then his face broke out in a grin as he hugged Lau.
Lau later took to the stage and made a heart-warming speech and serenaded Tan, leading the crowd in a rendition of the "Happy Birthday" song.
A surprise video presentation was also played for Tan, in which staff of various Berjaya outlets sang and danced to a medley of classic songs dedicated to him.
Thousands of people thronged the popular Berjaya Times Square shopping mall to soak up the atmosphere and events lined up for the celebration of Berjaya Founder's Day and Tan's birthday.
Berjaya Group staff, donning blue t-shirts, manned numerous food and game stalls set up on the concourse and 10th floor of Berjaya Times Square. Various outlets such as Starbucks and Papa John's had long queues of hungry customers and excited children.
On a stage erected at the lower ground floor of the mall, the opening gambit kick-started the cheery atmosphere with various local artists dressed up as animals singing the Lion King theme song, "Circle of Life".
The act was to draw attention to animal causes that reflected this year's theme, "Reach out and speak for those who can't".
"This has been a wonderful event. I am grateful to all the staff who have made this day so special, and I thank everyone here for making this such a special birthday," Tan said.
"I wish to thank my children, my wife, and my mother who is the main inspiration for my philanthropy," he added.
Various activities were also made available for the public – 40 NGO booths that were set up on the 10th floor where the public could find out about various causes and the distribution of 10,000 slices of the specially prepared 130-foot-long chocolate dragon cake at the main entrance.
There were also special events for Berjaya staff as part of the family day celebrations such as a talent competition and a lucky draw featuring a Mazda 2 as the grand prize.
