EC going for a late polling date? Nomination, polling dates to be fixed only on Wed

EC going for a late polling date? Nomination, polling dates to be fixed only on Wed
It looks like Malaysians may not get a quick balloting date despite Prime Minister Najib Razak dissolving Parliament earlier this week.
Instead of fixing the nomination and balloting dates as it had been expected to do so today, the Election Commission said in a statement it will hold a special meeting on Wednesday to make the much-anticipated decision.
"In relation to the dissolution, and based on the requirement of the Constitution, the EC has determined that a Special Meeting will be held on April 10 at the Commission's headquarters in Putrajaya to decide on the dates for the 13th general election," said the Commision's secretary Kamaruddin Mohamed.
April 20, 21 not possible but April 27 and May 27 still on the cards
Kamaruddin reiterated according to Article 55 of the Constitution, the EC must hold elections within 60 days of the dissolution of Parliament. That means that elections must be carried out before May 28 at the latest.
Speculation has been rife that balloting will be conducted either on May 11 or April 27. Even within Umno, many believe Najib would try to delay as long as possible, while his rivals such as Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin have publicly hinted that polls should be held before the end of April.
With the EC now due to announce the nomination and balloting dates only on April 10, as well fix a campaigning period of a minimum 7 days, it looks like the somewhat aggressive April 20 or 21 dates postulated by some pundits would no longer be possible.
Aside from the dates for nomination and polling, the upcoming special meeting will also announce the finalized electoral roll which will be used for the polls.
