KUALA LUMPUR - Barisan Nasional (BN) Wangsa Maju parliamentary candidate Datuk Mohd Shafei Abdullah (pix) expressed confidence that the dispute between Umno and MCA will be resolved soon.
"It is a normal human reaction as MCA feels it also deserves to contest here.
"They are still mad with this decision but I believe they will come to terms with the decision soon," Mohd Shafei told reporters at his office in Danau Kota today.
"The race for candidacy is over ... It is time for all component parties to close ranks and work together now," he said, adding he will engage with MCA Wangsa Maju leaders soon.
He also believed that his chance of winning here is high based on the local preference for a Malay representative in the constituency.
The Wangsa Maju Umno division chief was announced as the constituency's "favoured" candidate on April 16 by BN Federal Territory chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The decision, however, was met with angry response from MCA Wangsa Maju supporters as they had anticipated their divisional chief Datuk Yew Teong Look would be fielded there instead.
On Tuesday, Sin Chew Daily reported that Yew's supporters were disappointed with BN's overlooking Yew as a winnable candidate.
Wangsa Maju MCA election operations room chief Lim Choon Hong was quoted saying they would not support the Umno candidate.
He added they also did not fear disciplinary action from BN.
When contacted, a Wangsa Maju MCA member, who only wished to be known as Chin, echoed Lim's sentiments.
"We have been working hard on the grassroots level for the past five years to win back the seat," said Chin, adding the decision not to field Yew was a "blow" for the members.
