KUALA LUMPUR - The opposition and government bodies involved in the illegal assembly at Padang Merbok here today need to change the gathering venue to Stadium Merdeka to avoid traffic congestion.
Federal Territory Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor who visited Padang Merbok at 12.50pm to see for himself the proposed venue of the opposition assembly at 3pm said Jalan Parlimen which is located near the field is a main entrance to the federal capital especially on weekends.
"It is not strategic for the opposition to gather here. We have opened Stadium Merdeka for the opposition to hold the gathering today but they refuse," he said while being accompanied by Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad and several senior ministry officials on a survey of Padang Merbok.
He said if the opposition proceeded with the assembly at Padang Merbok, police reports would be lodged for legal action to be taken against them.
Tengku Adnan also expressed his appreciation and sympathy to the police force on duty to control the situation and ensure public order in the hot hazy condition.
Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh advised the people not to participate in the assembly today after the police received information that the organisers had directed participants to provoke the authorities.
Police expected the organisers to create chaos around Kuala Lumpur with the aim of disseminating to the world through electronic media the brutality of the authorities.
Apart from the police warning, the organisers also ignored the haze shrouding the country which resulted in many schools being closed in southern Peninsular Malaysia. – Bernama
