'MCA MPs and assemblymen not important’

The former MCA president says it is the grassroots, and not the elected reps, who will keep the party relevant.
KUALA LUMPUR: Amid a public spat between several MCA top leaders over the dismal electoral performance, former party president Dr Ling Liong Sik said today that it is the grassroots members who would keep the party relevant.
While he refused to be drawn into the spat that involves current president Dr Chua Soi Lek and vice president Donald Lim, Ling told reporters that the party’s grassroots outweighed the seven elected MPs and 11 state assemblymen in determining the party’s future.
“Let the grassroots keep working. MCA is a big party, even in very small villages we have a representative. If (the representatives) continue working hard, I think there is a future for the party,” he said.
“It is the grassroots who are more important. If you have only 7-11, but no grassroots, what for? But if you have grassroots, no 7-11 then that is okay,” he said in reference to the party’s elected reps.
The former transport minister also urged the grassroots members to continue operating their service centers even if they had lost in the recent 13th general election.
“As long as there are people who want to serve, any organisation that is serving the purpose is relevant,” he added.
Ling’s comments come hot on the heels of Lim’s open criticism calling for Chua to admit that the decision not to accept Cabinet posts was a mistake and it should be reviewed.
Lim said although the decision not to accept any government post should MCA fare worse than the 2008 GE was made collectively, many central committee members were reluctant to oppose the president’s proposal then because they were afraid of him.
However, Chua said the decision was passed both at the central level and annual general meeting last year, and Lim should read the meeting minutes to “refresh his memory”.
“Lim should first ask himself what he had contributed to the nation, especially in Selangor, as he sought to only spend his time and resources in one constituency,” Chua said.
Though both Chua and Lim were Ling’s protégés, the former president today remained non-committal when asked to comment on the tiff.
He said since the “no cabinet post” decision was approved according to party constitution, members should use the same way to overturn it.
“If anybody agrees, the party constitution is there. If anybody disagrees, the party constitution is also there,” he said.
