PRE-DAWN RAID: Police swoop in on sleeping campers to stop march to Parliament

PRE-DAWN RAID: Police swoop in on sleeping campers to stop march to Parliament
In a pre-dawn raid, police and City Hall enforcement officers swooped down on student activists camped out at the Padang Merbok field in a bid to foil their plan to march to Parliament House to protest electoral fraud in Malaysia's recently concluded general election.
"They came in at 4am but fortunately some of us had been put on guard. When we saw the police coming in, we gave the alarm and the rest of us quickly got up and gathered our things and belongings. No one was injured but there were a lot of police and City Hall officers. Maybe as many as us. We weren't scared but was it necessary? We are not armed, we are not terrorists," one of the student activists told Malaysia Chronicleat around 6.20am.
PM must take responsibility
The group, which consists of several youth and student NGOs, are now gathered in the vicinity. The source declined to tell Malaysia Chronicle the exact whereabouts.
There were more than 300 students and activists camped out at the field when the police struck. A few tents are still left on the field but the protesters have left the immediate area.
However, they have not given their plan to march to Parliament and demand the resignation of the Election Commission's top management including its chairman and deputy chairman.
"No way, we won't give up just like that. We will try our best to complete our mission. We want to deliver a message to Prime Minister Najib Razak. We have a right to express our views," said the activist.
"There is no reason why the PM of the country should be afraid to receive the views of the youth of this country. We are very unhappy at the cheating that went on during the GE13. Someone must take the responsibility."
Under close watch the whole of Sunday
The protesters had set up tents at the field which is located near to Parliament House and the Lake Gardens on Saturday after a mammoth Black 505 rally organized by the Pakatan Rakyat coalition led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.
The Saturday rally had been held to protest the electoral fraud allegedly perpetrated by Najib's Umno-BN coalition during the 13th general election.
The youth NGOs and students who stayed back had decided to camp out on the field They received eviction notices from City Hall at 10am on Sunday. A City Hall spokesman had said they were there to carry out their duty and had given the activists two hours to leave. "If they are still here, we will inform our superiors and wait for further instruction," he said.
