D-Day for MP accusing Anwar of holding offshore accounts

BN’s Simpang Renggam MP Liang Teck Meng will soon find out whether or not he will be referred to the House Committee of Rights and Privileges, after accusing Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim of holding some 20 offshore accounts.

A text-message to him from Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin states that the speaker has decided that the matter will be debated in Parliament on Thursday.

NONELiang (left) had cited WikiLeaks when he accused Anwar of holding some 20 foreign bank accounts, including in Israel, but Pakatan Rakyat has pointed out that the information is not on the website.

He had also claimed that the amount of money in those accounts amounted to some RM300 million.

When contacted, Sim said he would leave the matter in the speaker’s hands.

“Jelutong MP (Jeff Ooi) had raised the issue and the speaker then offered a chance to Simpang Renggam to withdraw his statement, but he refused. So the speaker said he would decide on the matter,” Sim said.

“It has been two weeks now, so today we asked the speaker for his decision and he told us that the matter will be debated.”

PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli weighed in on the matter outside the House, pointing out that Liang has yet to produce any evidence to back his claim.

"I don't think the House has any option but to debate the matter or the dignity of the House will be lowered to a place to sell slander," he said.

He added that Liang had merely based his claim on a pro-Umno blog which lacked credibility.
