Survey: Che Long is more popular, but BN...

KUALA BESUT A survey conducted by research house Ilham Centre shows that the popularity of the PAS candidate in the Kuala Besut by-election, Azlan Yusof, far surpasses that of his BN rival Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman.

However Azlan, or Che Long as he is widely known, faces an uphill battle in tomorrow's by-election, according to Ilham Centre's survey of 578 registered voters from the eight voting districts in Kuala Besut.

NONEOf these, 71.6 percent said they knew Azlan better, compared with 14.2 percent who said they knew Tengku Zaihan (right). The same number said they do not know either of the candidates.

The top quality in Che Long is that he is a friendly person, with 65.1 percent of the respondents stating so, while the top quality in Tengku Zaihan is his good education, with 45.3 percent saying so.

In terms of party, an overwhelming 82.7 percent of respondents said BN's best strength is its huge financial resources while 66.8 percent put commitment and aggressive machinery as PAS' best strength.
Money the top concern of respondents

This data does not bode well for PAS and Che Long as the top concerns of the respondents are monetary in nature, with 80.3 percent saying that poverty is an important issue in the election.

Another 41.5 percent cited the cost of living and job opportunities as their key concerns, while 30.4 percent chose infrastructure.

NONEThe survey also indicated that the popularity of Che Long (right) would not be of much help as 77.2 percent of the respondents said the party was more important, as against 12.8 percent who said that the candidate was more important.

Furthermore, in terms of what respondents are looking for in a candidate, an overwhelming 97.2 percent said they wanted an assemblyperson who is concerned about their needs and 94.6 percent want their representative to improve the local economy.

The survey, which also included interviews, found that many outstation voters were more inclined to support PAS. However, many of them would not return to vote as the polling day is on a weekday.

Ilham Centre is a research house founded in 2006. It focuses on field research in the areas of politics, economics and social and community issues, as well as on policy matters.
