'Cops getting it wrong on parliamentary democracy'

Cops are getting it wrong by hauling up an artist for producing Turun rally T-shirts on grounds that they were detrimental to parliamentary democracy as the opposite is true, says NGO Persatuan Kesedaran Komuniti Selangor (Empower).

She was referring to the police investigation against 37-year-old Mohd Zul Raidy Ahmad Tarmizi, better known as Eddy Gordo of Yellow Boutique, for printing T-shirts for the anti-price hike protest on New Year's Eve.

"It should be obvious that a parliamentary democracy must uphold the protection of this right.

"Artwork, including those produced by Mohd Zul Raidy (right), should be seen as part of the exchange of ideas and views between citizens which is crucial for a healthy democracy.

"Without the right to freedom of expression, the so-called 'parliamentary democracy’ is nothing but a sham," said Empower executive director Maria Chin Abdullah.

Maria, who is also Bersih chief, added that the police investigation against Mohd Zul Raidy is disproportionate and contrary to the right to freedom of speech as enshrined under Article 10 of the federal constitution.

She urged the police to drop the investigation.

On Thursday, Mohd Zul Raidy was arrested under Section 124D of the Penal Code for publications detrimental to parliamentary democracy. He was released after almost three hours later.

If found guilty, he faces a jail term of up to 15 years.
