Zambry: Pakatan thinks people can be played with

The move taken by Lee Chin Cheh of PKR to resign as Kajang assemblyperson on Jan 27 is a proof that the opposition really thinks that the people can easily be played and manipulated, Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir said.

He said it also proved that the opposition would do anything to achieve their goals without thinking about the consequences of their actions to the people, simply because they believed that whatever they do, the people would perceive and believe.

"A waste of money is not an issue for them. If it's done by BN, it will be a sin, but if they do it, it's a big reward (pahala)," he told reporters.

Lee won the Kajang state seat at the last general election with a 6,824-vote majority in a six-corner fight against BN, Berjasa and three Independent candidates.

On Jan 28, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim was named as the party's new candidate for the state by-election.

In BEAUFORT, Wanita Umno vice-chief Azizah Mohd Dun described Lee's resignation as a political game played by PKR in total disrespect to public trust and confidence, especially of those who voted for him in the last general election.

"He resigned before even discharging his duties to the people...(but) this is the game played by the opposition. Now, their leaders are fighting each other to become the next Selangor menteri besar," she told Bernama.

Azizah, who is also Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister, said Wanita Umno was prepared to face the by-election and would support the candidate named by BN.

"We are now prepared to deploy our machinery to Kajang, but let's wait for the Election Commission's announcement about the by-election," she added.

MCA to present shortlist of candidates soon

Meanwhile, MCA will present its shortlist of candidates for the Kajang state seat by-election to BN soon, party president Liow Tiong Lai announced today.

"The Kajang by-election is very important to MCA and BN. We will work hard together to win it to ensure we have a stronger representation to defend the fate of the Selangor people," he said after attending the party's Chinese New Year open house at its headquarters here.

Liow, however, declined to comment on the possibility of naming national badminton player Lee Chong Wei as MCA's candidate for the seat although he felt that the athlete's popularity could be on par with Anwar's.

Yesterday, a local daily quoted Padang Besar Umno division head Zahidi Zainul as saying he felt MCA should field a popular candidate against Anwar and suggested Chong Wei.

Wanita MCA chief Heng Seai Kie said Liow needed to be firm in selecting an MCA candidate for the seat.

She believed the party would succeed with the support of  BN component parties, MCA's transformation and its machinery, including the Selangor Wanita wing led by Ong Chong Swen.

Heng also did not discount the possibility of naming an MCA woman candidate for the by-election.
