MCA sets Feb 23 for EGM

The party is expected to pass a resolution allowing its top leaders to take up cabinet positions
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has fixed Feb 23 to hold another extraordinary general meeting, this time to discuss a resolution allowing party leaders to take up government positions at all levels, party chief Liow Tiong Lai announced today.
The EGM, second in the last four months, is held at  the request of 1,932 central delegates, who filed a joint petition to the party leadership yesterday, wanting the MCA to convene an EGM to reverse the party’s earlier decision not to take up cabinet posts.
It is also an attempt by the new leadership headed by Liow to rejoin the cabinet.
At an EGM in October, delegates voted in favour of rejoining local and state governments but struck out another resolution pertaining to MCA’s participation in the federal cabinet.
Should MCA rejoin Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s administration, it would be looking at only one vacant ministerial spot.
The Transport Ministry usually held by MCA has been left vacant for the party. Defence Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has been acting Transport Minister for the last six months.
The Health Ministry also the stronghold of the MCA has been taken up by MIC deputy president Dr S Subramaniam. The MCA could be looking at more than one Ministry if Najib decides to reshuffle the cabinet next month.
Unlike the last EGM, Liow said the Feb 23 meet would only have a single resolution which was to obtain endorsement from the national delegates for party leaders to take up cabinet positions.
