Uphold the law, Khairy reminds IGP

As police chief Khalid Abu Bakar opts for the "middle path" in child custody battles involving both the syariah and civil courts, Khairy Jamaluddin reminds him that the duty of the police is to uphold the law.

"As far as I am concerned as BN Youth chief, enforcement agencies must uphold the law, especially when it is clear," Khairy told a press conference today.

He said this when asked to comment on the statement by Khalid (right) that police would place children involved in such custody battles in childcare centres, so that "their parents have the opportunity to visit them".

Khalid was referring to the case of M Indira Gandhi against her ex-spouse Muhammad Ridhuan Abdullah in Ipoh, and the case of S Deepa against her ex-spouse Izwan Abdullah in Seremban.

In both cases, the syariah court and the civil court have each issued conflicting orders on who has custody of the children, with the syariah court ruling in favour of the Muslim convert fathers and the civil court ruling in favour of the Hindu mothers.

The Seremban High Court had issued a recovery order instructing the police to return V Mithran to her mother Deepa, while Muhammad Ridhuan has missed a court order deadline last week to return a six-year old girl to her mother Indira.

Khairy said the matter should be resolved as soon as possible, and the cabinet will be discuss it in a meeting on Friday.
