Hindraf wants ex-CJ probed for sedition

The police should investigate former chief justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad under the Sedition Act for his speech at a buka puasa event on Monday, says Persatuan Hindraf Malaysia (PHM) chairperson P Waythamoorthy.

Describing the speech as nauseating and degrading to all Malaysians, Waythamoorthy said in a statement that Hamid's message was directed at instigating ill-feelings among the Malay community.

“The police should investigate the former CJ for inciting racial hatred under the Sedition Act. The police must be impartial in their duties and be seen to apply the law equally.

“If politicians and reform-minded advocates and activists can be charged with sedition on the flimsiest of grounds, we see no reason why such a gross statement and incitement, especially by the former chief justice, should be let off easily,” Waythamoorthy (right) said.

He said PHM is of the opinion that the statement uttered by Hamid is that of “an ignorant idiot”.

Waythamoorthy said it seemed that Hamid has forsaken all that he studied in law school.

“It is a matter of grave concern to know that a man with such a racist and extreme mindset has led the apex court in Malaysia and delivered countless judgments which remain as precedents today. After 57 years of Merdeka, it is meaningless if the perpetuation of historical lies and instigation still exists,” he said.

Waythamoorthy also expressed shock that Hamid could have ascended to the post of the top judicial officer, and wondered how the selection process was done.

Speech uploaded on Hamid's website

“We now wonder if the judiciary actually comprises more racist judges,” he said.

A copy of Hamid's speech has been uploaded on his website.

At the event, Hamid said a former Penang mufti told him that it was difficult to secure allocations for Islamic activities in the state as other religious groups wanted their fair share too.

If left unchecked, such a scenario may spread to the whole of Malaysia and undermine the special position of Islam that has been enshrined in the Federal Constitution, Hamid warned.

Hamid who is Penang-born, also revealed the former mufti informed him about an incident during the launching of a building in the state attended by a deputy chief minister, where prayers were done by a Christian priest, a Hindu priest and the imam of the state mosque.

His comments were immediately criticised by the Penang exco member Abdul Malik Kassim, who challenged Hamid to provide facts and was willing to show him around to debunk his allegation.
