Kiki's conviction stirs racial sentiments

While a viral video of a woman attacking an elderly man in Kuantan received condemnation nationwide, some feel the conviction of Siti Fairrah Ashyikin Kamaruddin yesterday for criminal intimidation is unfair.

Looking at it through racial lenses, some quarters have taken to digging up other videos uploaded on social media where the attacker is of Chinese ethnicity and the person on the receiving end is Malay.

One message circulating on social media features a "collection" of six videos, mostly of Chinese men ragging on traffic police officers to get out of a traffic fine.

The "collection" also includes filmmaker Namawee ranting about how his ethnicity led to restrictions on his film Nasi Lemak 2.0, and of a man yelling "I am rakyat!" and "BN will lose" while resisting police in an operation at a pub in Damansara Utama.

"Why are videos of the Chinese verbally abusing Malay police officers not viral or trending (on social media)?

"We make noise after watching a video of a woman in Pahang verbally abusing an old man who rear-ended her car, but when police officers are abused and provoked, no one defends them," the message reads.

Urging WhatsApp users to pass on the message, it added that if the videos are trending, then news outlets, including Malaysiakini, would not be able to ignore it.

"Unless the news organisations are also anti-police and agree with the rudeness displayed by the Chinese against the police, who are only working to uphold our Federal Constitution.

"It is up to you whether you want to forward or share these materials. Don't let others say that we are easily goaded by the Red Bean Army who use Malays and Muslims as subjects to make us fight among ourselves..." it reads.

'We don't want another May 13'

Another video dug up was one uploaded in 2013 and features a Malay youth kicked repeatedly in the face by a Chinese man for allegedly attempting to rob a woman.

The youth is on the ground and is surrounded by people who appear to be guarding him to ensure he does not escape.

"Why don't you do other things, instead of resorting to crime?" the Chinese man says while repeatedly kicking the youth's head. The youth does not respond or fight back.

The video is also featured in blogs promoted by Umno Youth's Unit Media Baru Twitter account.

"This Chinese uncle is a bastard! Even if that kid is guilty, what right does he have to kick the Malay boy's face?

"I want to see how police handle this case. They were quick to act on Kiki, a Malay woman who hit the Chinese uncle's car, even though it was he who rear-ended her car.

"Will the police let this bastard uncle go? Don't start a racial fire, we don't want another May 13 (racial riot). The police should investigate fairly!" one Unit Media Baru blog reads.

He was referring to Siti Fairrah Ashyikin, 30, who goes by the nickname Kiki, who was fined RM5000 and ordered to do 240 hours of community service for hitting the car of Sim Hiak Hong, 68, with a steering lock.

Persatuan Veteran Tentera Melayu is expected to lodge a police report over the video featuring the Malay youth getting kicked today.

Police on July 21 said they are investigating the matter and urged anyone who knows about the incident to come forward.
