Time’s ripe for woman MB

And Wan Azizah is eminently qualified, despite what an Umno lawyer has said.

Menses or no menses, PKR President Dr.Wan Azizah Ismail is eminently qualified to become the next Menteri Besar of Selangor, provided the Pakatan Rakyat coalition is willing to change horses midway.
In giving his opinion that a woman, because she menstruates, could not do the job, Umno lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun was saying that Dr.Wan Azizah was automatically disqualified.
His statement was designed to embarrass her.
The issue has since become a talking—even a laughing—point among Malaysians, and the target of derision is not Dr Wan Azizah, but Hafarizam. He has invited ridicule upon himself for making such an insane statement.
Article 51(2) of the Selangor State Constitution only stipulates that no person should be appointed as Menteri Besar “unless he is of the Malay race and professes the Muslim religion”.
The candidate should also enjoy the support of the majority of the members of the state legislature.
According to Hafarizam’s thinking, a woman menteri besar, because she suffers  “uzur sharie” (menstruation), will sometimes be unable to accompany the Sultan at religious functions.
“Hence, though the article under the Selangor constitution may not hinder a woman from becoming a menteri besar, but by convention, there
could be problems because of the said circumstances,” Hafarizam said, according to a NST report.
“So conservative, so idiotic and so outdated…simply ignore him” said one reader.
That best sums up the reaction to Hafarizam’s statement.
Dr.Wan Azizah, a 61-year-old grandmother of four, was elected Kajang assemblywoman in a by-election in March, which PKR had engineered with the view of installing its de facto leader, Anwar Ibrahim, as the Selangor Menteri Besar.
But that plan has gone awry because of his sodomy conviction.
Dr.Wan Azizah is a Malay and Muslim and she should enjoy the support of all 44 members of Pakatan Rakyat in the Selangor assembly.
So there is nothing to stand in her way if she agrees to become the Menteri Besar.
A vote of no confidence can be taken if Khalid refuses to step down gracefully.
Another assemblyman or Dr.Wan Azizah can step forward and be sworn in as the Menteri Besar.
But Pakatan Rakyat may not be ready for the massive fallout that such a vote would bring. So, unless Khalid resigns, it looks like Pakatan Rakyat is saddled with him as the Menteri Besar.
If he does resign, Dr.Wan Azizah is a likely candidate as his replacement.
Why not let Malaysia have its first  woman Menteri Besar? The time is ripe for it.
