'Selangor voters' confidence in Pakatan eroded'

The crisis over the post of menteri besar in Selangor has certainly eroded the people’s confidence in Pakatan Rakyat, says independent pollster Merdeka Centre.

Its director Ibrahim Suffian told Malaysiakini that the rakyat do not like the politicking that has been taking place in the state.

Asked what would Pakatan’s chances be if a snap election is called in Selangor, Ibrahim said the opposition coalition’s chances would be negatively affected.

“I don’t know for certain how Pakatan’s chances will be affected, but it will not be affected in a positive way.

“Also, a lot of people are still not clear about what is actually happening,” he said.

Ibrahim believes the onus is on Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to resign so that the crisis will not be prolonged.

He also confirmed with Malaysiakini that findings of a poll conducted by Merdeka Centre on the crisis will be out next week.

Several political analysts have said that Pakatan’s chances do not seem bright if a snap election is conducted in Selangor.

Penang Institute fellow Wong Chin Huat said at a forum last week that Pakatan would be destroyed as most people would not be bothered to vote.

Beleaguered Menteri Besar Khalid was expelled from PKR last Saturday.

After obtaining the consent of the Sultan of Selangor to remain as menteri besar, Khalid went on to sack five DAP and PKR executive council (exco) members, while retaining four PAS exco members. Later, another PKR exco member resigned.

Yesterday, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ibrahim declared that she has majority support in the state assembly, with 30 assemblypersons in the 56-member legislature backing her as the next Selangor menteri besar.
