BUKIT MERTAJAM: Taman Medan church leaders do not need the written approval of the Selangor government to restore the cross taken down last week in the face of protests by Umno members, Azmin Ali said here today.
Azmin, who is Selangor menteri besar, said the church had not broken any rules in putting up the cross on the corner shophouse at Desa Mentari 2 commercial centre.
He said his office had yet to receive a letter from the church in Petaling Jaya, but added it was also not a practice for the menteri besar to put it in writing.
“I have given my undertaking to the church leaders and to the Christian community that the Selangor government is giving the assurance to them, that we will protect all faith including the minorities. So in this case, they should be allowed to put back the cross,” he said, according to The Star Online.
Azmin was here as deputy president of PKR to support party leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the party’s candidate in the Permatang Pauh by-election.
He said: “The cross is a sacred symbol of the Christian community and we have to respect that. I will not allow this extremism take place in Selangor.  We, the rakyat, will monitor closely the professionalism of the IGP to conduct a thorough and full investigation of the incident,” according to the report.
Taman Medan church leaders were reported to have said they would restore the cross only after obtaining the written approval of the menteri besar.
