BIGGEST FIASCO: 1Malaysia flour 'being sold in Singapore'

KUALA LUMPUR - Smugglers are selling packets of government-subsidised flour to Singaporeans at four times the price in Malaysia, leaders from the opposition Democratic Action Party have claimed.
At a press conference outside Parliament yesterday, Dr Ong
Kian Ming and Mr Lim Lip Eng produced photos of packets of flour with the 1Malaysia logo and the "Blue Key" brand with the price and subsidy in ringgit covered up.
They alleged that the flour, which retails in Malaysia for RM1.35 (S$0.50), was sold at a Singapore grocery store last month for S$2.20, the Free Malaysia Today website reported.
"We have read many reports of the rampant smuggling... at the Malaysian-Thai border. It is very disconcerting that this phenomenon seems to be happening at the Malaysia-Singapore border as well," they said in a statement.
Mr Lim pointed out that Utusan Online reported last year that traders in Malacca were having trouble procuring flour under the "Blue Key" brand.
"Taxpayers are paying for these subsidies, but profit is being made in Singapore," he said.
In 2009, Prime Minister Najib Razak promoted his 1Malaysia concept with the aim of helping every member of the public who is eligible and in need of aid.
In 2011, the 1Malaysia People's Stores, set up to offer products much cheaper than in other stores, came under fire from opposition politicians, who said prices were not as low as advertised and product quality was sub-standard. - http://www.soshiok.com/
