Traditionally, the real contest would be between PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and BN newcomer Suhaimi Sabudin, 43, a construction company managing director from Guar Perahu, Permatang Pauh.
The duo would face independent candidate Salleh Isahak, 53, a training consultant and president of Bakti Ikhlas Malaysia. Salleh, from Permatang Pasir, is also an ordinary member of Alma Umno branch.
Medical practitioner Dr Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin, 47, who lost his deposit in a three-corner fight for the Permatang Pauh seat in the last general election, had earlier announced his intention to contest.
He arrived at the nomination centre at Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara in Penanti at about 9.30am but decided not to run in the by-election after discovering that there are Salleh and Azman running against PKR and BN.
This is not the first time the soft-spoken 62-year-old Dr Wan Azizah is contesting in her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's stronghold of Permatang Pauh.
She first contested in 1999 after Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and imprisoned. She won the by-election with a 9,077-vote majority.
She retained the seat in the 2004 and 2008 general elections with a respective 590- and 13,388-vote majority while she led PR as opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat.
When Anwar was eligible to return into politics, Dr Wan Azizah quit as MP to make way for Anwar, who won the seat in the August 2008 by-election and in the 2013 general election.
He held the seat until he was disqualified following the Federal Court's decision to upheld his sodomy conviction on February 10.
Thousands of PKR and BN supporters had turned up to accompany their candidates to submit their nominations this morning.
Dr Wan Azizah was accompanied by her daughters Nurul Izzah Anwar, Nurul Nuha Anwar and Nurul Iman Anwar.
Also with her were PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, PKR leadership council member Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and central committee member Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa; DAP acting chairman Tan Kok Wai, parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
The PR leaders were escorted by easily over 5,000 PR politicians, members and supporters. In the front line was a group of youths in black Kita Lawan t-shirts shouting "reformasi" and "hidup rakyat".
Leaders who were present on the BN side included deputy Umno president and deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar and information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.
The Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency has 71,513 voters, of whom 70% are Malays while Chinese, Indians and others make up the remaining 20%, 6% and 4% respectively.
There are three state seats in Permatang Pauh. PKR holds Penanti and Seberang Jaya while PAS holds Permatang Pasir.
In the 2013 polls, Anwar retained Permatang Pauh with 37,090 or 58.56% of the total 63,332 votes cast, with a 11,721 majority.
BN’s Dr Mazlan Ismail garnered 25,369 or 40.06% of the total votes while independent candidate Dr Abdullah only received 201 votes (0.32%) and lost his deposit.
Based on the analysis of the 2013 results, Anwar received 40% Malay votes, 88% Chinese votes and 60% Indian votes to win the seat.
His biggest win was in PAS stronghold – the Permatang Pasir state seat – where he won 13,266 (66%) of the 19,965 votes cast in the 2013 polls, with a 6,632-vote majority.
In Penanti and Seberang Jaya, the two state seats won by PKR in the last general election, Anwar won 58% and 56% of the votes respectively.
