MALAYSIA'S GST IS HARAM - Muslim group Hizbut Tahrir slams 'well-paid' local mufti for abetting Najib

M'SIA'S GST IS HARAM - Muslim group Hizbut Tahrir slams 'well-paid' local mufti for abetting Najib
KUALA LUMPUR - The local chapter of a hardline Islamist group has condemned local muftis for backing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), accusing these leaders of blindly supporting Putrajaya’s regressive policies as they were too well-paid to care about the allegedly un-Islamic tax system.
Hizbut Tahrir Malaysia pointed out that this was in stark contrast what ulamas would have done in the past, which was to fight oppression to the very end, even if it meant imprisonment or death.
“We all know that the mufti’s position is a paid one and is glamorous. Therefore it has become commonplace for those who are paid to serve their masters and to allow their masters to do as they please.
“If they (muftis) do not (support the government)... they will lose their worldly position which they love so much,” the group said in a statement on their website titled ‘Why does the mufti’s fatwas always align with the government’s tyranny’?
“This is the problem with clergy and religious institutions in Malaysia. Almost all the fatwas they produce will only support and allow more tyranny brought on by the government.
“This is very different from the behaviour of ulamas back then who fought the tyranny of rulers until many of them were imprisoned and the martyrs killed by the rulers,” the statement added.
The Islamic group also said that the implementation of any taxation system, including GST was illegal according to Islam as it followed the ways of democracy and capitalism instead.
“Is it so difficult for the muftis to understand and reason with the government that any form of tax is haram?
“This is what happens when the Islamic system is not applied by a country and replaced with a democratic-capitalist system, until even the ulamas can’t get out from that frame of mind that has been planted by the capitalists,” the statement read.
This comes after the Federal Territories Mufti Datuk Dr Zulkifli Mohamad on Friday urged Putrajaya to exempt Muslims who already pay “zakat”, or alms, from the GST to prevent double billing.
But the Muzakarah Jawatankuasa Fatwa Kebangsaan (MJFK) head Tan Sri Datuk Dr Shukor Husin later refuted Zulkifli’s claims, reaffirming that the government can collect taxes, including GST, from the public be it from Muslims or non-Muslims.
Shukor also said that the collection of GST was “harus” (necessary), neither forbidden nor recommended, on condition the usage of the funds followed certain guidelines including the development of the country and helping the poor. - Malay Mail
