Why Dr Wan Azizah should be the candidate for Permatang Pauh – TK Chua

Hafidz Baharom’s piece on why PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is again selected as the candidate for Permatang Pauh by-election only shows his plain biasness, superficiality and shallowness.
As usual, the argument was there is a leadership vacuum in PKR and that is why the president herself must stand in the constituency. Besides, with her being the elected state assemblyperson for Kajang, she will be hard pressed for time to service the people in two different constituencies separated far apart. These are arguments typical of people who can see the trees everywhere but miss the forest.
We must first get our bearing right. PKR is not lack of leadership. It is just that leadership roles in opposition parties are just too daunting and difficult to play at this juncture of our history. If we can’t see the harassment they face each day and the tenacity required to carry out their tasks and responsibilities, then obviously we are amateurish.
Dr Wan Azizah as a candidate is to show how the opposition politicians in this country are curtailed and handicapped in various ways. It is not an indication of the lack of leaders in PKR.
She is the symbol to protest against injustice, gross mismanagement and incompetence that the country is now experiencing. She is the “message” to the people... grooming other leaders in PKR can wait.
With regard to Dr Wan Azizah’s limited time to serve in two different constituencies far apart, again the argument was shallow and flawed.
Dr Wan Azizah as a candidate is not for the purpose of seeing the clogged drains in Kajang or Permatang Pauh are cleaned or attended to. If we have the right government, dirty drains and garbage will take care of themselves.
We want Dr Wan Azizah to keep the alternative agenda alive. We want Dr Wan Azizah to galvanise the opposition, to provide hope for the people and to show that the struggle and the hardship faced thus far are not in vain.
She is the symbol of oppression, hence, she can play her role better.
It is not about Dr Wan Azizah being greedy or the party refusing to groom new leaders.
If PKR loses Permatang Pauh this time, it will set the clock back many years. Time is of the essence. So please don’t fool around with silly analyses and ideas.
