Heed Rompin message and quit now, PM told

Najib's resignation will show that he cares for Umno, says Khairuddin.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has been urged to heed the “clear signal” given by Rompin voters and quit his positions in Putrajaya and Umno.
A former Umno official said today that the party’s survival was at stake and Najib’s resignation would show that he truly cared about its future.
In a press statement lamenting Umno’s poor performance at the Rompin by-election yesterday, the former vice-chairman of Umno Batu Kawan, Khairuddin Abu Hassan, said it would be selfish of Najib to ignore the significance of the reduced majority.
“Rompin is a powerful Barisan Nasional stronghold,” he said. “Furthermore, the late Jamaluddin Jarjis (whose death occasioned the by-election), provided excellent service to his constituents. Yet, BN failed to attain a majority that it can be proud of.
“What does all this mean? Plainly, it is a clear signal that the people are gradually rejecting the current administration.”
Khairuddin said the reduced majority gave credence to former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad’s prediction that BN would lose the next general election if Najib were allowed to remain as Umno President and Prime Minister.
“Mahathir would not make his criticisms if he didn’t have strong reasons for doing so,” he said.
He advised Najib not to be taken in by “weak-minded” apple polishers, saying he could be destroying himself by basking in their flattery.
“Quit now with dignity, PM,” he said.
