Najib urged not to shame the Bugis

Having proclaimed that he was a brave Bugis warrior, he must face Mahathir in a public debate.
Shahbudin-Husin_najib_mahathir_600KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak who turned up in Tawau not so long ago and made much of his Bugis heritage has been urged not to shame his community in the wake of the challenge from former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to debate him openly on whether he is fit to continue as Prime Minister. “The question is whether he will make good on his bravado and accept the challenge to a public debate with Mahathir.”
“Najib has twice vowed that he will not surrender and will fight Mahathir who has been increasingly critical of him and wants him to step down on the grounds that he’s not fit to be Prime Minister,” said political analyst Shahbudin Husin in his latest blog posting. “Najib has the opportunity now to demonstrate whether he’s really a brave Bugis as he claims.”
“If he’s not willing to accept Mahathir’s challenge, after claiming to be a brave Bugis, how’s he going to meet the challenge of being Prime Minister, an ability which has been questioned by Mahathir?”
He was questioning whether Najib was genuine as  Bugis  are known in the region for their adventurous spirit and purported bravery. “If Najib doesn’t accept the challenge, he will not be able to meet the continuing criticisms from Mahathir which would surely follow.”
“Najib has twice challenged Mahathir. Apart from demonstrating his bravado before a 40,000 crowd in Tawau, he challenged the former Prime Minister in Kuala Lumpur a week ago.”
In Tawau, Najib even lapsed into Bugis with a famous line on bravery in his native tongue, he added. “The gist of it was that he would never surrender whatever the odds against him.”
“Their hairs must have stood on end, the Bugis proud to hear that Najib hasn’t forgotten his native roots. They were proud that behind his soft countenance and reddish lips, his lapse into his native tongue shows that the Bugis blood coursing through his veins hadn’t been polluted.”
Najib accepting Mahathir’s challenge, ventured Shahbudin, can overcome the public shame of not accepting a similar challenge from Opposition Chief Anwar Ibrahim before he was incarcerated. “The public can excuse him for that slip since he probably hadn’t come across the Bugis verse which he used in Tawau to fire up his spirits as a brave warrior of his ethnic group.”
Mahathir, noted Shahbudin, was on his second leg in Ipoh to oust Najib. The first, he recalled, was in Kuala Lumpur (Taman Melawati) three weeks ago. “More than 3,000 people were present in Ipoh. Sixty per cent were Umno members while the crowd included a good number of Indians and Chinese.”
He referred to the Umno Kampar division chief Radzi Manan turning up along in Ipoh with Gopeng Umno Wanita Chief Hamidah Osman, and former Pasir Pinji MP Yahaya Shafie. Razman Zakaria, the Perak PAS Commissioner, was also present.
