Tunku Ismail raps Khairy over ‘circus match’

JFA president says that contrary to Khairy Jamaluddin’s assertions, the Tottenham Hotspur match does nothing for the national team and only benefits FAM

PETALING JAYA: The much talked about football match between Malaysia and Tottenham Hotspur has come under fire mainly because it in no way benefits the national football team, said Tunku Ismail Idris ibni Sultan Ibrahim, the president of the Johor Football Association.
In an open letter posted last night on the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page, Tunku Ismail, who is also the Crown Prince of Johor, praised Minister of Youth and Sports Khairy Jamaluddin for his determination and dedication to sports but said he fell short of truly serving the people when he agreed with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) that the match would benefit the national team.
“This match serves one purpose and one purpose only – the proceeds of this match go to the organisers responsible to bring the team to Malaysia and FAM.
“But what benefit does it bring the National Team for the World Cup Qualifiers?”
He also described the Tottenham Hotspur match as a “circus match” that would not help in World Rankings despite the claim by FAM that it would. He pointed out it would in no way benefit local players either, as five foreign players have been picked to play.
He added, “We have to give more emphasis to the FIFA Match Dates as it can bring more benefit to our performance and ranking.”
He also advised Khairy to stand with Malaysian football and for what was right and added, “To move forward for the sake of football in the county, we should concentrate more on the National Team’s performance and ranking.
“Not forgetting the fairly distributed broadcasting rights to all the participating teams in Malaysia.”
He said Khairy was one who would “always have an answer” but reminded him all the same of how he contradicted himself when he insisted cow grass was too inferior for use at the Bukit Jalil national stadium but commissioned Johor FA’s field consultant to “replace the current turf with cow grass and maintain it as how we have done in Larkin.”
Tunku Ismail said he was merely speaking out for the “love of this beautiful game” and because he believed football in Malaysia needed to be managed with the “utmost integrity and transparency which in turn would benefit all the teams participating in Malaysia”.
He urged Khairy to do right by the people and ensure a match such as this one, would never take place again.
“I urge you to be sure that this is the last time because we should start doing things that are beneficial to national football and not benefitting those serving in FAM,” Tunku Ismail said to Khairy.
