DR M FLAGS OFF RACE FOR NAJIB'S CROWN: Will a Ku Li-Muhyiddin or Muhyiddin-Zahid combo lead M'sia NEXT?
KUALA LUMPUR - Amid growing speculation that embattled Prime Minister Najib Razak may push the panic button and launch Ops Lalang 2015 to crack down on his critics, be they be from his own Umno party or the Opposition, Malaysians were heartened by news that Kelantan prince Tengku Razaleigh had allegedly agreed to help retired premier Mahathir Mohamad bring 'the rougue PM' to book.
The 62-year-old Najib is mired up to his neck in corruption allegations and scandals, flowing from his debt-riddled 1MDB sovereign fund. But refusing to step down despite the anti-Najib fever sweeping the country, he has instead upped the ante on his opponents. Shocking the nation, Najib had sacked his deputy as well as the Attorney General in what is perceived as a blatant bid to cover up the 1MDB debacle and cling to power.
"All Najib's strategies are not working. Sacking Muhyiddin Yassin as DPM and Gani Patail as AG only made the people sit up and become aware of what was happening. Najib could not even get rid of the MACC officials, transfer the directors or sack Zeti. Yes, he can try to launch Ops Lalang 2015. That is his only resort now but it would also be signing his own political death warrant," a political source told Malaysia Chronicle.
"However, you view it - Najib is already finished. In the top political circles, the debate is now not about Najib going but which combination will replace him. Will it be really be Razaleigh as PM and Muhyiddin back to DPM, or will it be Muhyiddin as PM and Zahid Hamidi as DPM."
Zero future with Najib
According to the source, supporters of Zahid, whom Najib had appointed as DPM to replace Muhyiddin, have already held secret talks with his predecessor. While not ready yet to openly play 'Brutus' to Najib, Zahid has nevertheless allowed a 'very friendly' meeting with Muhyiddin in the presence of the Johor Sultan at a recent event, be played up.

"These things are delicate and very intricate but they are all mature players and understand that at any moment, the situation can suddenly turn and they may have to retreat - but only for a while. Down the road, Zahid can see he has zero future with Najib. He has to switch and he has to be quick about it. The same for Muhyiddin, he cannot rest on his laurels after the Johor Umno show of rebellion against Najib. The momentum must be maintained and Mahathir knows this.
"If those two (Zahid and Muhyiddin) don't understand this because they are not used to reacting fast, then Mahathir now has the Ku Li card to play. The old man is covering all his bases. I think Muhyiddin doesn't mind staying DPM to Ku Li's PM. Zahid will lose out if this happens but his opportunity is still there when Ku Li returns the caretaker PM's post. So for the Zahid camp, the Ku Li option is not too bad either - they won't oppose it but they will try to oust Najib with Muhyiddin first. The thing is - it is probably easier for Umno members to accept an internal putsch by the Muhyiddin-Zahid combo rather than a Ku Li-led parliamentary vote of no-confidence supported by the Opposition. But now with anti-Najib sentiment rising, it's whichever combo is first will get Mahathir's support."
The Ku Li card with help from ''friends' and 'foes'
According to Asia Sentinel, Mahathir and Razaleigh met Tuesday, August 11. The two veterans believe they would have unanimous support from the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition, which holds 89 of the 222 parliamentary seats although some Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) votes would be questionable after the fundamentalist Islamic party split earlier this year.
The ruling Barisan Nasional holds 132 seats, but UMNO has only 88 of them. A general election is not due until April 2018 – unless events overtake Najib’s defenses.
But "the parliament is dysfunctional in that the speaker [Pandikar Amin Mulia] is not a democratic speaker,” said the Asia Sentinel source, a constitutional lawyer.
“He controls parliament on behalf of the ruling coalition instead of being a neutral speaker. He won’t allow a vote of confidence on an incumbent prime minister who has lost the confidence of the people.”
However, with rank-and-file sentiment growing restive in the face of a financial scandal linking Najib to irregularities in the 1MDB scandal, some of the component parties in the BN could be open to changing horses.
The Malaysian Chinese Association or MCA, for instance, has grown disenchanted with UMNO’s increasing embrace of fundamentalist Islamic views and Malay-first rhetoric. Christian parties in East Malaysia could also be up for grabs.
Making the citizens even angrier
Meanwhile, despite the ringgit breaching 17-year lows to below the 4.00 mark against the U.S. dollar, the Najib administration is going about its business as usual, blaming the currency weakness on excessive politicking by the PM's rivals.
Since his appointment, Zahid Hamidi has been careful to show full support for Najib, defending the beleaguered PM from a wide range of allegations, accusations and attacks from social media.
What Muyiddin was seen as reluctant to do, Zahid is going about the business with full zest, zeal and enthusiasm warning the media that he will take action against anyone who is guilty of “spinning” stories and trying to topple the “democratically-elected prime minister.”
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and Najib Tun Razak
But who is really spinning stories? It is the government or the media or social media? This is the question that has to be truthfully answered by Zahid in the light of recent developments in the 1MDB fiasco.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is now being viewed dimly by Malaysians in the light of their revelation that the RM2.6 billion that was supposedly siphoned from IMDB into Najib’s personal account was actually “donations” in the run-up to the 13th GE.
This opens an even bigger can of worms: Why was the money channeled into Najib’s personal accounts if it was funds to be used for the general election? Moreover, the sum involved of RM2.6 billion is way above the limit for funds to be used in a general election.
Does this revelation indirectly mean that the 13th GE has to be declared null and void and a fresh general election held now? This is what it boils down to if the funds involved were used as a vote-buying exercise by Najib on behalf of Barisan Nasional.
Further to this revelation there was the confession of Xavier Justo that he supplied information on 1MDB which was allegedly tampered with by certain media organizations in a preposterous bid to topple the BN government.
But there were 400,000 emails in Justo’s possession. Is it possible to tamper that many documents? If there were only a few documents to be tampered with, it is understandable. But how do you go about tampering that much a body of evidence.
Going by the facts and not spins
Muhyiddin, Najib. Shafie
But let’s go across the facts carefully. In the last general election, despite many and varied warnings, Malaysians backed Barisan Nasional. This means they have to now stick with Najib and BN at least until the 14th GE or snap polls.
Giving Najib and BN the mandate to rule simply means the people have put their trust in a monkey to take care of the bananas. This is why Najib and his fellow cronies and sycophants are busy helping themselves to the national coffers.
The reason why Najib is bold and daring in his ways is because he holds absolute power in this country and is therefore considered to be above the laws of the land. These are facts and this is the reason why he is acting and behaving as he pleases.
Malay-Muslim majority Malaysia might contend that Najib is partaking of “rezeki haram” (ill gotten gains). But does it really matter to a person like him? Who actually puts religious beliefs into practice in a world of fast changing values?
This is how BN has governed Malaysia exclusively for 58 years since Merdeka in 1957 and it is going to be a real uphill task to try and dislodge them from holding sway over the country. This is why the attempts by the opposition coalition have so far met with no success.
Government institutions suspect and wanting in 1MDB probe
The failure of many Malaysians to understand what exactly is corruption means that they should be careful before they point an accusing finger of being corrupt towards Najib and BN-Umno. If Najib and BN-Umno’s corruption is obvious, it is because they are under the glare of scrutiny.
But how many more Malaysians of all walks of life in this country are engaged in bribery and corruption that they are able to stand against the corrupt Najib regime. This is why from the regimes of Mahathir to Badawi to Najib, the Malaysian governments of the past and present have been increasingly corrupt.
Notice how nonchalant and confident Najib is that he will get over this saga of having pilfered money from 1MDB. If at all, the evil of corruption is set to get only stronger in this country because Malaysians have failed to heed the warnings given in the past
The MACC, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Police Di Raja Malaysia and the Attorney-Generals’ office have all lost its integrity and credibility and is the butt of jokes and mockery and sarcasm by Malaysians of all walks of life.
It is really pathetic and painful for Malaysians to see Najib asking Malaysians to trust him when he has been guilty of breach of trust on so many occasions like the saying goes “a leopard never changes it spots.”
Badly handled crisis
Ever since the 1MDB fiasco broken open into the public eye, the Malaysian prime minister, his wife and BN-Umno have been consistently in denial of the facts and the truths of this diabolical saga that has boiled over the anger of Malaysians.
The BN government and state –controlled media have been consistently churning stories and spinning yarns to try and cover the tracks of their leaders’ atrocities and wrongdoings. All the while the BN government has been in vehement denial of the truth.
What is worse is for them to abuse their power and instead of rewarding and praising the whistle-blower’s, those who expose the evil of BN’s corrupt governance are instead hauled up by the authorities and punished to silence them and instill fear in others.
The BN leadership even had to be changed in a cabinet reshuffle when they broke ranks and now the new-look federal cabinet is trying to close ranks and sweep the issue under the carpet. Instead of the wrongdoer being punished, the persons who point out the wrong are being punished.
This is a grave travesty of justice and is set to destroy this nation that has all along this while been viewed as a rogue nation. Democracy has been severely compromised in the 1MDB saga and Malaysia and Malaysians are not set to be the same again.
Malaysians of this era will long remember the 1MDB saga and in the coming general election it will be resurrected to haunt Najib and the BN government if nothing is done to settle the matter amicably by the rule of law.
This is the reason why Malaysians believe the laws do not apply to those who hold political power and that they use their position to escape from wrong doing as there are evidently no check-and-balances in place to police and watch and supervise the prime minister and his cabinet.
Why the law-breakers must be punished
Whatever the rank of the public official, however high his or her ranking might be in government, no one must be spared from breaking the law in the 1MDB saga and the reason is obvious as then the law will be rendered null and void and selective in its use on certain people only.
This is why the law-breakers in the 1MDB saga must be brought to book, be charge-sheeted accordingly to the laws of the land and for the judiciary to take its course and decide on the facts of the case pertaining to 1MDB.
If the law does not run its course, if prosecution is only selective and for members of the opposite side of the parliament and does not apply to the governing leaders, then be careful as it will only be a matter of time before national law and order breaks-down and Malaysia becomes a failed state.
This is why Malaysians of all walks of life are following very closely the gamut of media and comparing news and views to see if the leaders of this country are really on board in their practice of the full tenets and obligations of democracy.
Malaysians are watching closely and the TangkapNajib protests are set to mark a string of criticism and release a barrage of condemnation on Najib and BN-UMNO leaders from which they will not be able to fully escape. - Malaysia Chronicle
