KUALA LUMPUR - Over 2,000 policemen will have their hands full when they go on duty to upkeep security and crowd control for the Bersih 4.0 rally here.
Sources revealed that police personnel from several other states have been roped in to assist Kuala Lumpur police with the gathering which may possibly turn out to be the "mother of all rallies".
Dataran Merdeka, the core point sought by organisers of the gathering will strictly be off-limits and rigidly guarded by police who will take positions as early as 4am.
Police are expected to seal off all entry points to Dataran Merdeka with barricades and barbed wires to keep the crowd at bay.
It is believed that a larger number of people are expected to show up compared to previous Bersih rallies.
"We believe more may turn up. There are several issues related to 1MDB and GST that the people may be dissatisfied with that may have them drawn to the rally to voice their grouses," a source said.
Kuala Lumpur police chief senior DCP Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa said taking part in the gathering was against the law as the organisers did not fulfil the conditions required by the law.
"We have tried talking to them, we have told the organisers to hold the rally a week later because of the Merdeka Day celebrations.
"However, they are adamant. As such, if there is any civil unrest, we will take action in accordance to the law," he said.
Tajuddin also said police hauled up leaders of the "red-shirted" Anti-Bersih protestors today for questioning over the violent threats they had made. - Sundaily
